A science graduate of Calcutta University, Sinha joined the New Theatres Studio in 1946 specialising in sound engineering. In 1950, he left for England and was associated with Pinewood Studio for two years. So far he has received national awards 19 times. His films have won laurels in International Film Festivals of Berlin, Venice, Moscow, San Fransisco, Locarno, Cork Festival in Ireland and Asian Festivals in Combodia and Seoul. The three films Sinha made, based on Tagore stories: Kabuliwala, Kshuditapasan and Atithi vividly re-create the ambience read between the lines of the Tagore masterpieces. His greatest achievement is that he can translate the poetic fervour of the texts into film language without deviating from the original as a matter of principle. His Apan Jan (1968) started a genre projecting the anti social "outsider' hero.
