Story: Rabindranath Tagore(Nastaneer) Dir: Satyajit Ray Story: Rabindranath Tagore(Nastaneer) Cast: Madhabi, Saumitra, Sailen English Subtitled
Synopsis: A subtle masterpiece of Ray’s middle period about the bored and neglected wife of a Calcutta intellectual who falls in love with her husband’s cousin, a young poet who she thinks would appreciate her for what she is more than her own husband. A warm, wry and rounded portrait of the breaking up of a middle-class marriage, based on a Rabindranath Tagore story. Directed by Satyajit Ray. Charulata (The Lonely Wife) was Ray's twelfth feature film. It was also the director's favorite. Ray described the film as the one which has the least defects. In an interview with 'Cineaste' magazine, when asked about his most satisfying film, Ray said, "Well, the one film that I would make the same way, if I had to do it again, is Charulata."
