Suresh Sinha (Guru Dutt), a famous film director marries Bina (Veena), the daughter of a wealthy man (Mahesh Kaul) but the relationship falls apart as film directing is a job lacking in social status. Sunil is denied access to his beloved daughter Pammi (Baby Naaz) who is sent to a private boarding school.
On a rainy night, he meets Shanti (Waheeda Rehman) who turns out to be ideally suited to act the part of Paro in his film, Devadas. Shanti becomes a star and gossip columns link her with Sunil. Distraught, Pammi pleads with Shanti to quit films, which she does, and her withdrawal leads to a rapid decline in Sunil's fortunes....
The classiest of the Guru Dutt films, Kaagaz Ke Phool is a no-holds-barred look at the film industry. Memorable songs composed by S D Burman add soul to the lyrics by Kaifi Azmi and Shailendra, especially the immortal 'Waqt Ne Kiya' and 'Dekhi Zamaane Ki Yaari'.
