Based on a novel by Suchitra Bhattacharya, this is the story of Romita (Indrani Haldar), a rather conventional and unhappy bride. A gang of men molests her while her husband looks on. Jhinuk (Rituparna Sengupta), a progressive schoolteacher, comes to her rescue. Ironically, society victimizes both women for attempting to upset the status quo and the story becomes a parable of the contemporary Indian woman’s situation. Both actresses jointly received the National Award for Best Actress for their performances in this film.
