Awards Best Bengali Film, New Delhi, 1989 ******************************* Satyajit Ray's "Ganashatru" is a Bengali film based on the famous Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen's "An Enemy of the People". An epidemic of mammoth proportions is waiting to happen in the town of Chandipur, where people are being affected by a mystery illness. A doctor at the town hospital, Ashok Gupta (Soumitra Chatterjee), traces this to a revered local temple, where pilgrims are being served with contaminated "holy water". When he suggests that the temple be closed down temporarily to repair the source of contaimination, he faces opposition from his own brother Nishith (Dhritiman) - who heads the town municipality - and an industrialist who owns the temple. They make the local community believe that Dr. Gupta is an enemy of the people.
