Iti Srikanta is based on the novel 'Srikanta' by renowned writer Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. The film is set in the Bengal of the 1910s. Srikanta the protagonist is a free bird. He hates any kind of bondage, but does not disdain relationships. He finds his identity on the roads he travels and uses his own sense of judgement rather than believe what society dictates. The women who are part of his journey are also different. Rajalakshmi, his childhood friend who had been sold by her mother, makes a comeback as a prostitute, and Srikanta has trouble fitting her in her new avatar into the image of her that he had preserved. She, however, has kept her love for him in her heart all these years. Slowly, Srikanta understands this, and his respect for her turns to love. But once she earns his love, she tries to possess him. Srikanta is suffocated, and escapes. He then meets Kamallata who lives in an ashram. Kamallata regards humanity as the ultimate form of religion, and believes that love does not contradict freedom. In her, Srikanta finds what he has sought all his life.
