This film stormed the box-office when it was released and marked the rise of Rajesh Khanna, as the super star of the seventies. The Phenomenon, as the fan-magazines called him, ruled the screen with his romantic image, his trademark sartorial style and his mannerisms! He plays both the father and the son in this movie, romancing both the adorably dimpled Sharmila Tagore (who went in for an image change in this film) and the effervescent Farida Jalal. S D Burman’s music became the anthem of the era, with ‘Mere Sapnon Ki Rani’, 'Roop Tera Mastana' and 'Kora Kagaz Tha Yeh Man Mera' going on to establish Kishore Kumar as Rajesh Khanna's “voice”, ever after.
